Get the Best QuoteWhat Vineyard Irrigation Includes
- Drip line on the wire. Line clipped to the lowest trellis wire, keeping it clear of mowing and cultivation.
- Dripper choice. Pressure-compensating drippers for slopes and long rows, non-PC on flat short rows.
- Block design. Separate valves per cultivar, rootstock or soil so each can be watered differently.
- Headworks. Filtration, fertigation and pressure control matched to the water source.
Who It Suits
Wine grape growers wanting control over vine vigour and berry size, and table grape growers who need steady water for size and quality.
It suits new plantings and older vineyards moving from sprinklers or furrow to drip.
System Options
- Single line per row. The standard for most wine grapes.
- Double line. Used on light soils or high-yield table grapes to wet more of the root zone.
- Establishment setup. Close dripper spacing or extra drippers near young vines, adjusted as roots spread.
- Deficit irrigation. Deliberately applying less than full water at set stages to control vigour and quality on wine grapes. It needs blocks that can be run independently and good soil moisture data.
Table grapes generally need more water than wine grapes, so check system capacity for the peak months.
How the Job Runs
- Site visit. The contractor checks blocks, trellis type, row length, slope, soil and water.
- Design. Dripper flow and spacing, valve layout and pipe sizes are worked out per block.
- Quote. Infield drip is priced per ha, with headworks and mains listed separately.
- Installation. Mains and submains are trenched and drip line is laid and clipped to the wire.
- Commissioning. Flows and pressures are checked along rows and the system is flushed.

Prices JUST UPDATED. Ballpark figures, rounded, excluding VAT unless stated. They are compiled from published South African cost estimates and typical supplier and contractor rates. They are not our prices or quotations, and no contractor is bound by them. Unless a row says otherwise they exclude the water source, power supply and earthworks, so confirm exactly what each quotation includes.

Get the Best QuoteWhat Affects the Price
- Row spacing. Closer rows mean more metres of drip line per ha.
- PC drippers. Pressure-compensating line costs more but is needed on slopes.
- Number of blocks. More valves give more control but add cost.
- Single or double line. A second line roughly doubles the lateral material.
- Water source. Dam or canal water needs more filtration than borehole water.
Maintenance
Flush lines and clean filters through the season. Check for damage from pruning, harvesters and rodents, and keep clips holding line off the ground.
Treat lines for algae or lime blockages where water quality calls for it.
Vineyard Irrigation FAQs
Should drip line hang on the wire or lie on the ground?
Most vineyards hang it on the lowest wire to avoid damage from cultivation and mowing, and to keep it visible for checks.
Do I need pressure-compensating drippers?
On slopes or long rows, yes, to keep output even. On short, flat rows non-PC line can be enough.
Can my system handle deficit irrigation?
Only if blocks can be watered separately. Ask contractors to design block valves around cultivars and soils.
