Get the Best QuoteWhat Orchard Irrigation Includes
- Infield system. Drip lines or micro-sprinklers along each tree row.
- Mainlines and submains. PVC or HDPE pipes that feed each block from the pump.
- Block valves. Valves that let you run blocks separately by cultivar, age or soil.
- Headworks. Filtration, fertigation and pressure control at the pump or block.
Who It Suits
Growers establishing new orchards, replanting old blocks, or converting from flood or overhead sprinklers.
It also suits existing orchards where trees have outgrown the original layout and need more wetted area.
System Options
- Single drip line. Low water use and easy fertigation. Common on young trees and close spacings.
- Double drip lines. Two lines per row wet more of the root zone for mature trees or light soils.
- Micro-sprinklers. Wet a wider area, help on sandy soils and some can give frost protection. Use more water than drip.
- Young vs mature trees. Young trees need a small wetted zone close to the trunk. Plan a layout that can be expanded as trees grow, such as adding a second line or larger micro-sprinkler.
Soil type, tree spacing, water quality and how much water you have are the main choices to weigh up.
How the Job Runs
- Site visit. The contractor checks block layout, soils, slope, tree spacing and the water source.
- Design. Emitter type and spacing, block sizes, pipe sizes and pump duty are worked out.
- Quote. Equipment and installation are priced, usually per ha plus headworks.
- Installation. Mains are trenched, submains and valves fitted, and lines laid along rows.
- Commissioning. Pressures and flows are checked at block ends and emitters tested for even output.

Get the Best QuoteWhat Affects the Price
- Drip or micro. Micro-sprinkler systems usually cost more per ha than single-line drip.
- Tree spacing. Closer rows need more lateral pipe per ha.
- Slope. Steep or uneven blocks may need pressure-compensating emitters.
- Filtration. Dam or river water needs heavier filtration than clean borehole water.
- Distance to blocks. Long mainlines from the source add pipe and trenching.
Maintenance
Flush laterals and clean filters regularly. Check emitters for blocking and replace damaged micro-sprinklers after pruning or harvest work.
Before peak summer demand, check block pressures and confirm each tree is getting even water.
Orchard Irrigation FAQs
Drip or micro-sprinklers for my orchard?
Drip uses less water and suits fertigation. Micro-sprinklers wet more soil, which helps on sandy soils and with shallow-rooted trees. Many contractors will quote both.
When should I add a second drip line?
Usually as trees mature and roots spread beyond the first line's wetted zone. Planning for it at installation keeps the cost down later.
Can I convert an old sprinkler orchard?
Often yes. Contractors check whether the existing mains and pump can be reused at the new flow and pressure.
What should I compare between quotes?
Compare emitter type and spacing, filtration, block sizes, pipe class and what commissioning includes.
