Soil Moisture Monitoring

Leaderr approved Soil Moisture Monitoring - aerial view of a farm with orchard and crop rows where soil probes and telemetry can be installed

Soil Moisture Monitoring uses probes and sensors in the root zone to measure how much water is in the soil, with readings sent to a phone or dashboard. Send one request and independent monitoring installers and suppliers who may work in your area reply with options and prices.

Send your crops, number of blocks and soil types to get soil moisture monitoring quotes.

What Soil Moisture Monitoring Includes

  • Probes or sensors. Multi-depth capacitance probes, tensiometers or single-point sensors placed in representative spots.
  • Installation. Augering or pushing the probe in at the right depths with good soil contact, in the wetted zone.
  • Telemetry. A logger with GSM, LoRa or satellite link that sends readings at set intervals.
  • Dashboard. An app or web platform showing moisture by depth, trends and rain or irrigation events.
  • Alerts and reports. Notifications when soil reaches set refill or full levels, plus season summaries.

Who It Suits

Fruit, nut, grape and vegetable growers who want to see what happens below the surface after each irrigation, and farms with variable soils where one schedule does not fit every block.

It is also useful where staff irrigate on instinct and the manager wants objective data.

Sensor Options

  • Capacitance probes. Measure at several depths in one tube. Show water movement and root activity well. Most common on high-value crops.
  • Tensiometers. Measure how hard roots must pull for water. Low cost, but need regular servicing and suit wetter ranges.
  • Single-point sensors. Cheaper per point, buried at chosen depths. Good for spreading coverage over more blocks.
  • Logger only or full service. Some suppliers sell hardware only. Others include data interpretation.

Ask about battery life, signal coverage on your farm and whether the data can be exported.

How Installation Runs

  1. Site selection. The installer picks representative positions per block, avoiding wet spots, pipe leaks and block edges.
  2. Depth planning. Sensor depths are set to cover the active root zone and just below it.
  3. Installation. Probes are fitted with tight soil contact, close to an emitter or within the sprinkler pattern.
  4. Connection. Loggers are linked to the network and readings are checked on the dashboard.
  5. Settling and setup. After a few irrigation cycles, refill and full lines are set for each probe.

Prices JUST UPDATED. Ballpark figures, rounded, excluding VAT unless stated. They are compiled from published South African cost estimates and typical supplier and contractor rates. They are not our prices or quotations, and no contractor is bound by them. Unless a row says otherwise they exclude the water source, power supply and earthworks, so confirm exactly what each quotation includes.

What Affects the Price

  • Number of probes. Each block or soil type usually needs its own probe.
  • Sensor type and depth. Longer multi-depth probes cost more than single sensors.
  • Signal. Weak cell coverage may need LoRa gateways or satellite links.
  • Subscription. Platform and data fees are usually charged per probe per year.
  • Travel and call-outs. Remote sites add travel to installation and service visits.

Maintenance

Check readings after big rain or irrigation to confirm probes respond. Keep loggers and solar panels clean, replace batteries as advised, and protect cables from machinery and animals.

Probes may need re-installing after orchard replanting, deep ripping or if soil contact is lost.

Soil Moisture Monitoring FAQs

How many probes do I need?

Usually at least one per block with a distinct crop, soil type or irrigation shift. Installers will suggest a number after seeing your layout.

Does monitoring tell me when to irrigate?

It shows soil water levels. Turning that into a schedule is a separate scheduling decision, which some suppliers include as advice.

Can probes switch my irrigation on?

Some platforms can link to a controller, but that is an automation setup. Monitoring on its own only measures and reports.

Will it work without cell signal?

Yes, with LoRa gateways or satellite loggers, but these add cost. Tell installers about signal problems when you request quotes.

Agricultural Irrigation South Africa is a quote-comparison service. We do not design, supply, install or repair irrigation systems, and we do not employ contractors. Work is quoted and carried out by independent irrigation businesses, and your contract is with the business you choose. Ask each one for a written quotation that names the equipment, design flows and pressures, preparation, timing and any warranty terms before you pay a deposit.
