Micro Irrigation Systems use small low-volume sprinklers, micro-jets or mini-sprinklers, usually one per tree and close to the ground, to wet a wider patch of soil than a dripper. Send one request and independent irrigation installers who may cover your area reply with availability and prices.

Get the Best QuoteWhat Micro Irrigation Systems Include
- Headworks. Filtration, pressure control, valves and an optional fertiliser injector.
- Mainline and submains. Supply to each block, with block valves.
- Laterals. Poly pipe along the tree rows.
- Emitters. Micro-sprinklers, micro-jets or mini-sprinklers on stakes, fed by small tubing.
- Commissioning. Flushing, pressure checks and a check of each wetting pattern.
How Micro Differs From Drip and Sprinklers
- Versus drip. Micro wets a wider area and blocks less easily, but loses more water to evaporation and wets more weeds.
- Versus overhead sprinklers. Micro runs at lower pressure and keeps water under the canopy, so leaves stay drier and less water drifts in wind.
- Frost and cooling. Some growers use micro-sprinklers for frost protection or cooling, which needs extra system capacity.
Who It Suits
Citrus, avocado, mango, macadamia and other tree crops, especially on sandy soils where drip wets too narrow a strip. Mini-sprinklers also suit nurseries and shade houses that need gentle watering of beds and containers.
Choosing Emitters
- Micro-sprinklers. Rotating spinners with a wide throw, for mature trees.
- Micro-jets. Static jets with fixed patterns, low cost, often for young trees or strips.
- Mini-sprinklers. Higher flow and radius, for nurseries and close plantings.
- Flow and radius. Chosen to match tree size; many models take different nozzles as trees grow.
Pressure-compensating models help on slopes. Ask about insect-resistant designs, as ants and spiders often block nozzles.

Prices JUST UPDATED. Ballpark figures, rounded, excluding VAT unless stated. They are compiled from published South African cost estimates and typical supplier and contractor rates. They are not our prices or quotations, and no contractor is bound by them. Unless a row says otherwise they exclude the water source, power supply and earthworks, so confirm exactly what each quotation includes.

Get the Best QuoteHow the Job Runs
- Site visit. Tree spacing, soil, slope and water source are checked.
- Emitter selection. Flow and radius chosen for the soil and tree size.
- Layout and quote. Block sizes, lateral lengths and filtration.
- Installation. Headworks, mainline, laterals and emitters on stakes.
- Commissioning. Each block is run and pressures and wetting patterns are checked.
What Affects the Price
- Tree density. More trees per ha means more emitters, tubing and stakes.
- Emitter type. Rotating micro-sprinklers cost more than static jets.
- Filtration. Dirty water still needs good filters, though not as fine as for drip.
- Capacity. Frost protection needs larger pipes and pumps.
- Automation. Controllers and solenoid valves for many blocks.
Maintenance
Check emitters for blockages, broken stakes and spinners jammed by insects or debris. Flush laterals, clean filters and replace emitters damaged by mowers or workers. Move or change emitters as trees grow so the wetted area keeps up with the root zone.
Micro Irrigation Systems FAQs
Is micro or drip better for my orchard?
On sandy soils micro often covers more of the root zone. On heavier soils drip can use less water. Many growers ask installers to price both.
Do micro-sprinklers block?
Less often than drippers because the openings are bigger, but filtration is still needed. Insects, sand and algae are the usual causes.
Can I change emitters as trees grow?
Yes. Many emitters take larger nozzles, but check that the laterals and pump can handle the extra flow.

Agricultural Irrigation South Africa is a quote-comparison service. We do not design, supply, install or repair irrigation systems, and we do not employ contractors. Work is quoted and carried out by independent irrigation businesses, and your contract is with the business you choose. Ask each one for a written quotation that names the equipment, design flows and pressures, preparation, timing and any warranty terms before you pay a deposit.
