Work Western Cape Farmers Request

Local Factors Contractors Check

  • Summer peak demand. Most of the province gets its rain in winter, so crops depend on irrigation through the dry summer. Systems must be sized for peak summer water use, not the average.
  • Water allocation. Many farms draw scheme water through a water user association or irrigation board, with a fixed quota and restrictions in dry years. Your allocation limits how many hectares one system can carry.
  • Slopes. Hillside vineyards and orchards usually need pressure-compensating drippers and careful block layout.
  • Dam and river water. Algae and silt in summer call for proper filtration ahead of drip and micro.
  • Frost. Some inland valleys use overhead or micro-sprinklers for frost protection, which needs far more flow than normal irrigation.
  • Power. Pumping cost and supply interruptions push some farms to solar pumping with storage dams.

How Assessment and Quoting Work

  1. Request. You send the crop, hectares, water source, allocation if known and the work you need.
  2. Call or visit. Contractors who may cover your farm call back, and for new systems usually visit to check the water, slopes, soil and power.
  3. Design. For new blocks the contractor or a designer works out flow, pressure, pipe sizes and the pump duty point.
  4. Quote. You receive written prices to compare on the same design basis.
  5. Timing. Most installs are planned between harvest and the start of the summer irrigation season.

What to Include in Your Request

  • Your town or farming district.
  • The crop, planting layout and hectares.
  • Water source: scheme, river, dam or borehole, and the flow if known.
  • New system, extension, repair or servicing.
  • Power at the pump: Eskom, generator or solar.
  • When the work must be done, for example before budburst or planting.

Agricultural Irrigation Western Cape FAQs

Do I need a water allocation before installing irrigation?

Yes. Irrigation water must be lawful use, such as a scheme allocation, a registered existing use, a general authorisation or a licence. Check with your water user association, irrigation board or the Department of Water and Sanitation before planning new hectares.

When is the best time to install?

Between harvest and the start of summer irrigation, usually autumn and winter. Contractors are busiest just before the summer peak, so book early.

Can contractors work around harvest?

Usually. Say when blocks are being picked or sprayed so trenching and shutdowns are planned around it.

Can my existing pump and mainline be reused?

Often, if they match the new flow and pressure. Ask the contractor to test the pump and check the mainline class before quoting.

Agricultural Irrigation South Africa is a quote-comparison service. We do not design, supply, install or repair irrigation systems, and we do not employ contractors. Work is quoted and carried out by independent irrigation businesses, and your contract is with the business you choose. Ask each one for a written quotation that names the equipment, design flows and pressures, preparation, timing and any warranty terms before you pay a deposit.
