Farm Irrigation Installation

Leaderr approved Farm Irrigation Installation - crew joining white PVC mainline pipes in a trench beside coils of black poly pipe on a farm

Farm Irrigation Installation covers putting a new system in the ground, from the pump connection to the last lateral, and testing it before handover. Send one request and independent irrigation contractors who may cover your area reply with availability and prices, so you can compare before you commit.

Send your hectares, crops, water source and preferred system to get installation quotes.

What Farm Irrigation Installation Includes

  • Pump connection. Tying the system into an existing or new pump station, with a non-return valve, pressure gauge and air release at the outlet.
  • Mainlines and submains. Trenching, laying and joining PVC or HDPE pipe sized for the design flow, then backfilling with care around fittings.
  • Valves and blocks. Hydrants, isolating valves and block valves so each section can run on its own.
  • Laterals. Drip lines, micro lines or sprinkler laterals laid out per block, or a machine set up on its pad.
  • Commissioning. Flushing, pressure and flow checks per block, and a handover with a layout drawing and operating settings.

Who It Suits

Farmers bringing new land under irrigation, converting from flood or dryland, replacing a worn-out system or adding new blocks. It also suits buyers who already have a design and want installers to price the work against it.

If you have no design yet, ask installers to quote design and installation together, or get a design done first.

Choosing a System

  • Drip. Water goes straight to the root zone. Suits orchards, vines and row crops, and needs good filtration.
  • Micro-sprinklers. Wets a wider area under trees and copes better with dirtier water than drip.
  • Overhead sprinklers. Dragline, semi-permanent or permanent sets for pasture, field crops and vegetables.
  • Centre pivot. Low labour on large, fairly flat, open fields.

Water quality, soil, field shape, crop, labour and power supply usually decide the system. Ask each contractor to explain why they recommend theirs.

How the Job Runs

  1. Site visit. The contractor checks the water source, pump, power, field layout and any existing design.
  2. Quote. You get a layout and a priced bill of quantities. Compare pipe classes, brands and exclusions.
  3. Trenching and pipe laying. Mainlines go in first, then valves and submains, then laterals.
  4. Pressure test. Lines are filled and held at test pressure before trenches are closed.
  5. Commissioning and handover. Each block is run, pressures are recorded and you are shown how to operate the system.

Prices JUST UPDATED. Ballpark figures, rounded, excluding VAT unless stated. They are compiled from published South African cost estimates and typical supplier and contractor rates. They are not our prices or quotations, and no contractor is bound by them. Unless a row says otherwise they exclude the water source, power supply and earthworks, so confirm exactly what each quotation includes.

What Affects the Price

  • Area and system type. Drip and permanent sprinklers cost more per ha than dragline; pivots get cheaper per ha on bigger circles.
  • Distance from the water source. Long mainlines and bigger pipe diameters add cost quickly.
  • Pump and power. A new pump station, switchgear or power line can be a large share of the budget and is often quoted separately.
  • Ground conditions. Rock, steep slopes and wet ground slow trenching.
  • Add-ons. Filtration, fertigation and automation raise the price but can be phased in.
  • Travel. Remote sites may carry travel and accommodation charges.

Maintenance After Installation

Ask for the as-built layout, the pressure readings per block and the manufacturer manuals at handover. These make later fault finding much faster.

Walk the lines after the first few irrigations to catch leaking joints early, then plan flushing, filter cleaning and a pre-season check every year.

Farm Irrigation Installation FAQs

Do I need a design before installation?

For anything bigger than a small plot, yes. Pipe sizes and pump duty depend on it. Many installers include design in their quote or will price against a design you already have.

Are the water source and power included?

Usually not. Boreholes, dams, power lines and transformers are normally priced separately, so check every quote for exclusions.

How do I compare installation quotes fairly?

Ask each contractor to quote on the same area, system and water source, and to list pipe classes, brands, filtration and what commissioning includes.

Can an installation be done in phases?

Yes. Many farms put in the pump and mainline for the full area first and add blocks later. Tell contractors upfront so the mainline is sized for the final area.

Agricultural Irrigation South Africa is a quote-comparison service. We do not design, supply, install or repair irrigation systems, and we do not employ contractors. Work is quoted and carried out by independent irrigation businesses, and your contract is with the business you choose. Ask each one for a written quotation that names the equipment, design flows and pressures, preparation, timing and any warranty terms before you pay a deposit.
