Agricultural Sprinkler Systems spray water over the crop from impact or rotating sprinklers, fed by moveable pipes, fixed laterals or large guns. Send one request and independent irrigation contractors who may cover your area reply with availability and prices.
Send your hectares, crop, water source and available labour to get sprinkler system quotes.
Get the Best QuoteWhat Agricultural Sprinkler Systems Include
- Mainline and hydrants. Buried pipe with hydrants at set spacings across the field.
- Laterals. Pipes or hoses carrying water from the hydrants to the sprinklers.
- Sprinklers and risers. Impact or rotary heads with nozzles chosen for spacing and pressure.
- Valves and pressure control. Isolating valves and regulators to keep pressure even.
- Commissioning. Pressure checks and a test of coverage overlap.
Who It Suits
Pasture, lucerne, vegetables, sugarcane, potatoes and field crops, especially on fields where a pivot does not fit. Sprinklers handle uneven and smaller fields well and tolerate dirtier water than drip. They need more pressure, so pumping costs are higher, and wind affects evenness.
Sprinkler Options
- Dragline. Sprinklers on hoses moved by hand from hydrant to hydrant. Lowest capital cost, most labour.
- Quick-coupling movable. Aluminium or PVC pipes moved between positions.
- Semi-permanent. Buried mainline and laterals, with sprinklers moved between fixed points.
- Permanent or solid set. Sprinklers fixed across the whole field. Highest capital cost, least labour, easiest to automate.
- Big guns. High-volume sprinklers for pasture and odd areas, needing high pressure.
Labour, crop height and how often you are willing to move pipe usually decide the option.
How the Job Runs
- Site visit. Field shape, water source, pump and labour are assessed.
- Layout. Sprinkler spacing, nozzle sizes and hydrant positions for even coverage.
- Quote. Pipe, sprinklers, valves and labour itemised.
- Installation. Mainline trenching, hydrants, laterals and risers.
- Commissioning. Pressure checked at the first and last sprinkler, and overlap confirmed.

Prices JUST UPDATED. Ballpark figures, rounded, excluding VAT unless stated. They are compiled from published South African cost estimates and typical supplier and contractor rates. They are not our prices or quotations, and no contractor is bound by them. Unless a row says otherwise they exclude the water source, power supply and earthworks, so confirm exactly what each quotation includes.

Get the Best QuoteWhat Affects the Price
- System type. Dragline is cheapest to install, solid set the most expensive.
- Spacing. Closer spacing means more sprinklers but better evenness in wind.
- Pressure and pump. Sprinklers need more pressure than drip, which affects pump size and electricity.
- Automation. Solid-set systems can be run by valves and a controller.
- Field shape and size. Irregular fields need more hydrants and fittings.
Maintenance
Replace worn nozzles, as they increase flow and spoil evenness. Check springs and bearings on impact sprinklers, repair leaking couplings and hoses, and keep risers upright. Check pressure at the hydrants regularly so a worn pump or leak is noticed early.
Agricultural Sprinkler Systems FAQs
Dragline or permanent sprinklers?
Dragline costs less to install but needs labour every day to move lines. Permanent systems cost more upfront but need little labour and can be automated.
How much pressure do sprinklers need?
More than drip or micro, and big guns need much more. Ask the installer to state the pressure needed at the nozzle and the pump duty.
Can sprinklers be used for frost protection?
Some growers do, but it needs a dedicated design with enough water to run the whole block at once. Get design advice before relying on it.

Agricultural Irrigation South Africa is a quote-comparison service. We do not design, supply, install or repair irrigation systems, and we do not employ contractors. Work is quoted and carried out by independent irrigation businesses, and your contract is with the business you choose. Ask each one for a written quotation that names the equipment, design flows and pressures, preparation, timing and any warranty terms before you pay a deposit.
