Irrigation Pump Installation

Get the best quote
Leaderr approved Irrigation Pump Installation - farm crew laying PVC mainline from the pump to orchard and crop blocks, with poly pipe coils and a truck

Irrigation Pump Installation covers choosing a pump that matches your system's flow and pressure, then fitting it with the right suction, delivery pipework and electrical supply. Send one request and independent pump installers that may cover your area reply with their prices, so you can compare before you commit.

Send your water source, flow, pressure and power supply to get pump installation quotes.

What Irrigation Pump Installation Includes

  • Pump selection. Sizing the pump to the duty point: the flow in m³/h and the total head in metres or bar your system needs.
  • Intake work. Foot valves, suction lines and floating or fixed intakes for rivers and dams, or a drop pipe and cable for a borehole.
  • Delivery pipework. Non-return valves, isolating valves, pressure gauges, air valves and the connection to your mainline.
  • Electrical. Starter or switchgear panel, motor protection, cabling and earthing, done by a qualified electrician who issues a certificate of compliance.
  • Pump house or plinth. A concrete base, shelter and ventilation that keep the pump dry, level and secure.
  • Commissioning. Checking flow, pressure, amps and rotation against the design before handover.

Who It Suits

Farmers adding a new irrigation block, replacing an undersized or worn-out pump, moving from diesel to electric, or equipping a new borehole. It also suits anyone whose pump runs but never quite delivers the pressure the drippers or sprinklers need.

Pump Types and Selection

  • End-suction centrifugal. The common surface pump for dams and rivers. Simple and easy to service, but needs a short suction lift.
  • Multistage. Higher pressure from stacked impellers. Used for drip and micro systems on longer or uphill lines.
  • Submersible borehole pump. Sits below the water level. Must be sized to the borehole yield from a proper yield test, not to the field's demand alone.
  • Variable speed drive (VSD). Adjusts motor speed to demand, gives soft starts and suits systems with blocks of different sizes.

Ask each installer which duty point they sized for and where it falls on the pump curve. A pump running far from its best efficiency point wears faster and costs more to run.

How the Job Runs

  1. Site visit. The installer checks the water source, suction lift, pipe route, power supply and the system the pump must feed.
  2. Sizing and quote. You receive a pump model, motor size in kW, duty point and an itemised quote.
  3. Civil and pipework. Plinth, pump house and intake are built, then suction and delivery pipework is fitted.
  4. Electrical connection. Panel and cabling are installed and certified.
  5. Commissioning and handover. Readings are taken under load and you get the settings, manuals and warranty details.

Prices JUST UPDATED. Ballpark figures, rounded, excluding VAT unless stated. They are compiled from published South African cost estimates and typical supplier and contractor rates. They are not our prices or quotations, and no contractor is bound by them. Unless a row says otherwise they exclude the water source, power supply and earthworks, so confirm exactly what each quotation includes.

What Affects the Price

  • Motor size. Bigger flow and higher head need more kW, a bigger pump and heavier cabling.
  • Water source. Deep boreholes and long river intakes add pipe, cable and labour.
  • Distance to power. Long cable runs or a new transformer connection can cost more than the pump.
  • Controls. A VSD, pressure switches or remote control add cost but can save energy and wear.
  • Civil works. A full pump house costs more than a simple plinth and cover.

Maintenance

Keep intakes clear of debris, check for air leaks on the suction side, and listen for new noise or vibration. Record pressure and amp readings each season so a drop in performance shows early. Bearings, seals and VSD cooling fans need periodic checks by a pump technician.

Irrigation Pump Installation FAQs

What information do installers need to quote?

The water source, how deep the water is or how far the intake is from the pump, the flow and pressure your system needs, the pipe length and height to the field, and what power is available.

Should I fit a VSD?

A VSD helps when demand varies between blocks or when you want soft starts on a large motor. On a small pump feeding one fixed block, a standard starter is often enough.

Can my old pump be reused on a new system?

Sometimes. An installer can test it and plot its duty against the new system's needs. If it is far off the curve, a replacement may cost less to run.

Does the electrical work need a certificate?

Yes. Fixed electrical work should be done by a registered electrician who issues a certificate of compliance.

Agricultural Irrigation South Africa is a quote-comparison service. We do not design, supply, install or repair irrigation systems, and we do not employ contractors. Work is quoted and carried out by independent irrigation businesses, and your contract is with the business you choose. Ask each one for a written quotation that names the equipment, design flows and pressures, preparation, timing and any warranty terms before you pay a deposit.
